Real-time reporting and live subtitling have two separate long-standing traditions: the former as a technique to produce rapid transcriptions of orally-produced texts;  the latter as the only way to let deaf people access an audiovisual product. With the rapid evolution of data-transmission technology first and then of speech-recognition software the applications of both real-time reporting and live subtitling are increasing in number and merging into the larger category of voice translation. This is now an umbrella term covering not only court, parliamentary, medical, and board reporting, but also conference subtitling and TV live subtitling through respeaking.

However, since it is mainly an intralingual activity, mainstream academia still continues looking at voice translation as a material process (as a mere transcription) more than an editorial, hence intellectual, activity. As a consequence very few European faculties supply their students with courses on voice translation.

This workshop aims at providing participants a theoretical and practical insight into this new context. In the first part of the workshop an overview of the most important differences between spoken and written language will be offered and the many applications of voice writing will be discussed. Than thanks to the most recent Nuance and FBL technologies participants will have the opportunity to be introduced to the use of speech recognition software and both to know more about and to experience a new translator profile: the voice translator, both on-line and off-line.
